Planning Outdoor Activities in Jamaica
When planning a vacation, consider visiting Jamaica. Its a very good travel destination. There are many things to do and see in Jamaica. For those who love nature and being outdoors, here are a few things to do while on the island.
1. River Rafting The rafts in Jamaica are made out of bamboo. These rafts are usually propelled by using a long bamboo pole which is used to push the raft forward. The bamboo pole touches the bottom of the river and the raft is pushed forward in this way. A rafts-man, while standing, pushes and guides the raft where he wants it to go. There is seating on the raft for passengers. There are several places to go rafting in Jamaica. The most popular rivers used for rafting are the Martha Brae River in Montego Bay, Jamaica and the Rio Grande River in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Rafting can be a very relaxing and romantic experience.
2. Dunns River Falls Dunns River Falls are located in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. This is a busy and very popular destination for both locals and tourists. An admission fee is charged before you can enter. Upon entering youll find changing booths, areas to take a shower, food stores, the beach and of course the beautiful Dunns River waterfalls. The aforementioned beach overlooks the ocean and swimming is permitted. Dunns River Falls is a fresh waterfall which cascade down a mountain of rock. You can climb the falls. Climbing the falls is not very difficult because the falls ascend gently upwards and is not very steep. Usually you can find large numbers of people forming a human chain, by holding hands, and slowly walking towards the top of the falls. The water in the falls is river water so its cold. However, if you go on a hot and sunny day the water should not be too cold. The water from the falls flows into the ocean which lie at the bottom of the falls.
3. Gutts River Gutts River is tucked away in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Gutts River has a blue waterhole, and a river where swimming is allowed. Gutts River flows into a nearby ocean. In the viscinity, there are privately run stands where you can buy freshly caught fish then have it cooked or roasted for you. Mmmm delicious.
4. Milk River Baths Milk River Baths are located in Clarendon, Jamaica. The waters in the baths are warm and full of minerals of various types. The baths are open to the public and no reservation is necessary. There is also a hotel associated with the baths but staying in the hotel is not required; unless you want to stay overnight. There is an admission fee.
5. Green Grotto Caves Green Grotto Caves are located in St. Ann, Jamaica. The caves are large and are a natural phenomenon which were cut out of limestone, over time, by water. Daily guided tours are given of the caves and there is an entrance fee charged. On the tour of the caves youll learn the rich history of the caves and also how the caves were formed.
Please note that from time to time attractions are closed for renovations, shorten or lengthen their business hours, or undergo change of some sort; therefore do some research before planning to visit any of these places. Also, remember to dress appropriately because these are outdoor activities which may involve climbing, walking on rough terrain, being exposed to the sun and/or being exposed to water.
