Edmonton, Alberta Honored as Canada's 2007 Cultural Capital

Edmonton, Alberta (PRWeb) March 1, 2007 -- Long known as the gateway to the Canadian Rockies, home to the world's largest mall, and Canada's Festival City, Edmonton, Alberta now occupies a new position among Canadian destinations as the 2007 Cultural Capital -- and with good reason. From the Alberta Ballet, celebrating its 40th anniversary season this year, to the Edmonton Opera, Edmonton's cultural offerings are some of the foremost in Canada.

Edmonton Tourism assists visitors in planning cultural family vacations with the "What's Hot" Calendar of Events, as well as information about Edmonton hotels and dining in different areas of the city. Many visitors planning a cultural Edmonton getaway choose to stay near the Edmonton's Downtown Arts District, which features many of the city's most popular activities.

The Downtown Arts District includes the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, where the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra performs; the Citadel Theatre; the Art Gallery of Alberta; City Hall, which houses its own collection of Alberta art; the Shaw Conference Centre for Edmonton meetings, conventions, and trade shows; and the Metro Cinema with year-round screenings of classic, documentary, and alternative films. This season the events range from performances of Macbeth and Don Giovanni at the Edmonton Opera to Frida K. and Oliver!, ideal for the Alberta family vacation with a bit of culture.

In addition to an Arts District, an Edmonton getaway might include a visit to the Theatre District in Historic Old Strathcona. This collection of ten theatres includes the Catalyst Theatre, with unique performances of old favorites such as Frankenstein; the Fringe Theatre for Young People; and the Walterdale Playhouse, a nearly 50-year-old amateur performance venue.

With over 60 art galleries, Edmonton is an art collector's paradise. The Art Gallery of Alberta serves as one of Canada's renowned contemporary art venues, while the 124 St. Area features galleries galore as well as a Gallery Walk. Other Edmonton art excursions might include the Alberta Craft Council, with the works of over 200 members, and the nearby Dow Centennial Centre, which includes the Sherritt Cultural Pavilion.
